Galleries: Bird stone carvings
The endless variety, tremendous character and the essential wildness of birds has always fascinated me. The challenge for me is finding and working with a stone appropriate for the character of the bird; alabaster for the ethereal wren, metamorphic granite for the unyielding crow, black Weardale limestone for the blackbird, Pentewan for the speckled thrush. For each statue a different stone. Each bird is life size so the smaller birds need an intermediary , a plinth whose stone and form is sympathetic to the sculpture.
